Our Year In Review
Rediscovering the artists that made 2022
At the beginning of 2022, we couldn’t predict the shape this year would undertake. Thinking that it will be a restorative year after the covid months, we couldn’t predict that for many, it would be one of the hardest years of their lives. There is definitely change in the air, and the status quo of the yesteryears has been shaken. A new war in Ukraine, a woman’s revolution in Iran, women fighting for freedom in Afghanistan, and many more conflicts and everyday struggles filled the prime time on our screens. Death is ever-present, so it’s hard not to start reflecting on our personal lives and wondering how does the bigger world affect our own desires and destinies. Can we trust society as it is organized right now? How do we/I fit in the bigger picture?
At Tarantula: Authors and Art, we have been planning and reshaping what this magazine is all about. Creating and allowing ourselves to access our imagination and desires seemed the most important choice as we published month after month. It allowed us to become the architects of our own lives as well as providing us with much joy. And despite being aware that not everyone has a lot of time on their hands to create, our desire to inspire you to share your stories became stronger this year especially since we realized how much first person accounts matter, visually or verbally. It’s your untold stories that help us understand the human condition, not the same old stories by newscasters, celebrities, influencers sponsored by ad agencies, governments and big companies. So we want to invite you to share more with us and inspire us as we hope to continue to inspire you in 2023.
This year and the lessons we learnt on our way, wouldn’t be possible without the nine women artists that we featured. We never had a goal to only feature women, but maybe this year it is exactly what was needed as it is time for women to take more space. So as we say goodbye to 2022 and welcome 2023, we would like to share with you once again the interviews with these wonderful artists. They took us to many places, the Venice Biennale, dreams inspired by growing up in Chile, Ukraine, being displaced, and many colourful inner landscapes as well as hidden truths. So we rewind back to the beginning of the year and present them to you as they came into our lives Enjoy!
