Tarantula: Authors And Art's Featured Artist Of June
Stories Of The Body by Kristina Aleksynaitė
Today I use my body as the main instrument to explore human identity. Body as a context, a memory storage, a spiritual being.
I turn the photo camera to myself first. By understanding myself, I feel a deeper connection to humanity. It's as if, looking at my hands, I can see all my ancestors.
In my works I use simple objects that are physically close to me with personal meanings, like family belongings, spiritual or heritage relicts.
For example, the photographic series "Before Leaving" attempts to capture the present moment in the face of fundamental changes - migration, identity and existential questions.
Using scraps of gauze, I create a sculpture of myself. It is as if she freezes and immortalizes my body under the wet texture of the material and looks from the side, asking what kind of sculpture-human being I am today.
With my works I invite viewers to experience the process of self-knowledge, the purification, the meditative transcendence to essence.

For the last twelve months, we have covered different landscapes, different themes, but for the month of June, we embark on a subject that carries the lightness, the burden, the ups and the downs, that serves as a container for all our experiences, even those from centuries before - our bodies.
Tarantula: Authors And Art is excited to feature Lithuanian photographer, Kristina Aleksynaitė, just in time for the summer when our bodies become an object of fascination or rejection. Through Kristina’s conversations with her own body, using the medium of photography, she encourages us to look at our body with gentler eyes, and sets us on a whole new journey to self discovery.
