Exploring the production of our own private spectacles with Maša Barišić
“I am interested in exploring the contradictions and ambivalences of the contemporary state marked by the rise of digital platforms, social networks and the capillary production of spectacle in ways that were almost unthinkable just a few decades ago. A life filled with uncertainty, idleness and the illusions of accessibility for new generations of an unusual blend of intrusiveness and fragility, ambition and passivity. I try to capture these contradictions through the contrast and busyness of colour. The richness of colours and vivid tonality appear as means of revealing latent discomfort and as acatalysts for coping with a generational sense of dark euphoria. I am interested in the position of oil painting today or rather what can oil on canvas tell us about digital painting, or, to put simply, what does the portrait say about the selfie?”
