Tarantula's Featured Artist of March 2022
Nothing is obvious with Sandra Vitaljic
“I am a visual artist based in Stockholm, Sweden, working primarily with photography with a focus on social issues. Through my work, I explore topics of collective memory, construction of national identity and violence against women in close relationships. In my theoretical and curatorial work, I am engaged with conflict photography and the ethics of photographic representation.
My most recent work "I Just Greet Back" is a collection of thoughts and experiences from women that I met while paving my own path as an immigrant. I strive to create a collective diary of our struggle to find dignity under precarious circumstances, and to make visible what often remains untold.”

As we question how many women and their stories, throughout history and in the present moment, have been missing from our general knowledge, Tarantula: Authors and Art is happy to kick off March, the International Women’s Month, with artist Sandra Vitaljic.
Using a visual language that on first sight seems beautiful and feminine, Sandra Vitaljic ruptures right through the surface and seeks the real meaning behind the words of powerful men, whether they are used in politics or within the walls of their own homes; she also doesn’t shy away from real struggles that women undertake in preserving their sovereignty.
Please invite your friends to join us this month for a different perspective through Sandra’s works and a bit of our own her-stories!
Tarantula: Authors and Art is a reader-supported publication. If a friend forwarded you this post, please consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
